Measuring architecture governance: the KPIs that matter

“Is our architecture governance actually working?” is a fair question — and one most practices can't answer. A small set of KPIs turns governance from a black box into something you can prove.

A handful of KPIs is enough to show governance is working.

Why measure governance?

Without metrics, governance is judged on feeling — usually as overhead. A few clear KPIs show its value, expose where it's failing, and give leadership confidence.

The KPIs that matter

Keep it to a handful

A dashboard of 10–15 KPIs with a simple RAG status and a trend is far more useful than a hundred metrics nobody reads. Focus on the few that reveal whether governance is enabling delivery.

Report it regularly

Bring the KPIs to the Design Authority and to leadership on a regular cadence. Trends over time are what build trust that governance is working.
